The Suffering of the Season

Image and video hosting by TinyPicThe lights of the season,

effervescent and twinkling,

belie the suffering--

the anguish

that takes no holiday,

that continues to wash over us

as regularly as the sea

being pulled by the moon

with no respect for the season

or the day.

And yet, we long for this

that we can not touch.

We long for the joy this season brings,

even though we can not feel it.

We reach out for warmth and cheer

however fleeting and short-lived.

We need it to sustain us

in the suffering of the season.

I love this one, especially [the anguish. . .] "that continues to wash over us / as regularly as the sea / being pulled by the moon."

You tie together so many constant, wonderful things (in this case gravity and spheres) to other concepts. What a joy to read. It reminds me of John Donne.

Hi there! I have read several of your poems here. I like them a great deal. I also love this photo!

I like how the anguish takes no holiday. Nice way to tie in sadness and joy.

I'll be back to read more!

Hello Dymphna.
I am new to your blog but find I very much like the way you put words together. I can feel as if I am there....in the poem rather than reading it with detachment.
If you are out and about, stop by and visit. You are welcome and I enjoy the opionions of poets

This one speaks volumes to me (i.e. on a personal note). It's a slice of reality on a backdrop of a special, big occasion of every year.

the anguish
that takes no holiday,
that continues to wash over us
as regularly as the sea
being pulled by the moon
with no respect for the season
or the day.

No-holds-barred lines. Just the right measure of bluntness. I like them so much. ;)
